Living Under Fascism

 7 November 2004
 First UU Church of Austin

March 7, 2005: This sermon by Rev. Dr. Davidson Loehr, originally delivered on

November 7, 2004, has recently been the subject of discussion on Air America 's

"Morning Sedition" as well as in other media outlets.

SERMON: Living Under Fascism

You may wonder why anyone would try to use the word "fascism" in a serious

discussion of where America is today. It sounds like cheap name-calling, or

melodramatic allusion to a slew of old war movies. But I am serious. I don't

mean it as name-calling at all.

Halliburton Detention Camps For Political Subversives

Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | February 1 2006

In another shining example of modern day corporate fascism, it was announced recently

that Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root had been awarded a $385 million

dollar contract by Homeland Security to construct detention and processing facilities in

the event of a national emergency.

The language of the preamble to the agreement veils the program with talk of temporary

migrant holding centers, but it is made clear that the camps will also be used "as the

development of a plan to react to a national emergency."

Video: Lawrence O'Donnell Says Abramoff Had 'Run'

09/29/2006 @ 10:13 am

Filed by David Edwards

A draft report from the House Government Reform committee, to be released

this morning, says that indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff had many more

connections to the Bush Administration than the White House had originally

reported. Abramoff's billing records and emails indicate that, over a three year

period, he had 485 lobbying contacts with the White House. 10 of those contacts

were with Karl Rove.

Bush's 'Dirty War' Amnesty Law

By Robert Parry
September 23, 2006

The United States is following the lead of “dirty war” nations, such as Argentina

operatives, apparently up to and including President George W. Bush, who have

committed or are responsible for human rights crimes.

Make a Call: Don't Let the White House Bully

Congress on Spying

A federal judge has ruled that the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance

program violates the Constitution and must stop. But the White House and its allies

are continuing to pressure Congress for new and expanded government spying powers.

Help convince Congress to support the rule of law, not unchecked executive power.

Call your elected officials today and ask them to reject Dick Cheney's new spying

proposals, before these bad bills leave committee and face highly politicized debates

in early September in the Senate and the House.

Bush Appointment Draws Quick Fire

August 31, 2006, 5:06 pm

President Bush’s recess appointment today of lawyer Paul DeCamp,to be

administrator of the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor drew

quick fire from some Democrats, particularly those seeking to make Wal-Mart

a campaign issue. Bush nominated him for the post, but the Senate hasn’t acted

on the confirmation. At the law firm of Gibson Dunn, DeCamp has represented

employers and defended Wal-Mart in a big employment-discrimination case.

Bush’s Control of Foreign Journalists

Aug. 28, 2006 -- SPECIAL REPORT FROM EUROPE. Information visas

(I-Visa) -- a Bush administration method for controlling the foreign media's

coverage of the United States.

You're a foreign journalist and you want to visit the United States to cover a

story. If you think it is as easy as hopping on an airplane, even if you are a

citizen or resident of a visa-waiver country, guess again. Journalists wishing

to travel to the United States -- whether they are with print, television, radio,

or Internet media -- must first obtain an "I-Visa" from the U.S. embassy or

selected consulates responsible for their jurisdictions. Freelance journalists

who are not under contract to a U.S.-recognized media organization need not apply.

Artificial Recovery, Real Job Losses

Will the Unemployed Become Cannon Fodder for Bush's Wars?

Readers want to know why I have not reported on the payroll jobs statistics for the

past two months. Does this mean, they ask, that the situation has turned around and

that the US economy is again creating jobs in export and import-competitive sectors?

Alas, no. I did not write about the past two payroll jobs data reports, because it is the

same distressing story that other readers say they are bored with hearing.

The July report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists 113,000 new jobs, all of which are in services.

Reign of Error

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Published: July 28, 2006

The Bush administration continues to be remarkably successful at rewriting history.

Amid everything else that’s going wrong in the world, here’s one more piece of depressing

news: a ... Harris Poll reported that 50 percent of Americans now believe that Iraq had weapons

of mass destruction when we invaded, up from 36 percent in February 2005. Meanwhile, 64

percent still believe that Saddam had strong links with Al Qaeda.

At one level, this shouldn’t be all that surprising. The people now running America never accept

inconvenient truths. Long after facts they don’t like have been established, whether it’s the absence

of any wrongdoing by the Clintons in the Whitewater affair or the absence of W.M.D. in Iraq, the

propaganda machine ... is still at work, seeking to flush those facts down the memory hole.

Lou Dobbs Slams Bush on Signing Statements

RAW STORY
Published: Monday July 24, 2006

Lou Dobbs took a critical look at President Bush's use of signing statements. An American Bar Association task

force has determined that the president's use of signing statements are a violation of the Constitution. Signing statements

are similar to a line-item veto which the Supreme Court said was unconstitutional.

Dobbs quotes the ABA, "This is an outrage being perpetrated against the Constitution of the United States."

Bush's "White Lies" at the NAACP Convention

by Greg Palast

[Friday, July 21.]  God lost this time. I counted: Bush mentioned God only six times in his

speech to the NAACP yesterday. The winner was 'faith' — which got seven mentions, though

if you count "The Creator" as God, well, then the Lord tied it.

Coming in right behind God and Faith, other big mentions in the First Home Boy's rap included:

The Voting Rights Act, his family’s "commitment to civil rights," the "death tax," rebuilding New

Orleans, "public school choice" and "soft bigotry."

As the philosopher Aretha Franklin once said, "Who’s zoomin’ who?"

Let’s take it one point at a time.

KEN LAY'S ALIVE!

by Greg Palast
Wednesday, July 19, 2006

Don't check the casket.  I know he's back. When I saw those lights flickering out at La Guardia

Airport yesterday and heard the eerie shrieks and moans in the dark, broiling subway tunnels,

I just knew it:  Ken Lay's alive!  We can see his spirit in every flickering lightbulb from Kansas to

Queens as we head into America's annual Blackout season.

It wasn't always so.  For decades, America had nearly the best, most reliable electricity system on

the planet and, though we grumbled, electricity bills were among the planet's lowest.  It was all

thanks to Franklin Roosevelt and the Public Utility Holding Company Act which allowed for tough

regulation of the power monopolies.  They were told what they could charge, the maximum profit

they could take and -- what I think about when the lights dim -- exactly how much they had to invest

to keep the juice flowing.

But then, in 1992, a Texas oil man, George H.W. Bush, ordered to evacuate the White House by

two-thirds of the US electorate, gave his Houston crony, Ken Lay, a billion-dollar good-bye kiss:

Bush's signature authorizing deregulation of electricity.

The Ugly Truth About the President

By Cenk Uygur, HuffingtonPost.com

You know it, I know it and the American people know it. But everyone is afraid to say it.

They say it privately, but people are afraid of saying it publicly because you will be branded as

a liberal, elite, intellectual snob. But believe me, you don't have to be an intellectual to see how

painfully stupid our president is.

Just look at the conversation he is having with world leaders at the G-8 summit. Mikes picked up

the casual talk between the world leaders. Forget that Bush appears to have three sandwiches in

his mouth while talking. Forget that he calls out to the Prime Minister of Britain as if he is Flounder

in "Animal House." Forget that he uses profanity. I don't give a shit about those things.

Dan Rather's Raw Deal

By Greg Palast, AlterNet
Posted on June 23, 2006, Printed on June 23, 2006
http://www.alternet.org/story/37948/

They finally put Dan Rather out of his misery at CBS. CEO Leslie Moonves put on his

best mourning face, offering upon Rather's departure, "He had a very distinguished career.

I'm sorry he's leaving us." However sorry Moonves may be, he still sent Rather to the glue

factory -- all for reporting the truth. But not all of it.

Rather's "unsubstantiated story of Bush's military service" (says USA Today) got him canned.

Yet, all the poor man did was repeat a story the Brits put on BBC Television a year earlier --

that Poppy Bush put in the fix to get his son out of 'Nam and into the Texas Air Guard, spending

his war years guarding Houston from Viet Cong attack.

But Dan never reported this: the documentation from inside the US Department of Justice

detailing the fix. Why not? Because it opened up a far more serious charge: that those who

kept Little George out of war's way ended up very well rewarded. The BBC, the world's biggest

network, ran that full story -- from the evidence of the fix to the evidence of the lucrative

pay-backs -- and the BBC never retracted a comma of it. Nor, by the way, has the White House

denied our accusations despite our repeated offers to respond.

Who Will Be Left Behind?
Date: Monday, June 19 @ 09:46:34 EDT
Topic: Liberals And The Left

Ezekiel Jones, OpEdNews

I'm an American who left the U. S. for Europe a year ago in part because of concerns

about the worsening political situation in my country of birth. Last week, under my pen

name "Ezekiel," I've had two articles published: "Why Americans Should Be Packing Their

Bags NOW and " Get Your Assets Out Of The U. S. NOW."

Hundreds upon hundreds have responded by email and requested my free monthly newsletter,

and the stories that many of them shared with me about their situations have left me wondering

in the middle of the night what will happen to these people. Some are so wrapped up in the patterns

of their daily lives that they are constantly trying to convince themselves that it's safe to stay. Others

are so afraid that they cannot imagine that any place is safe. The ones who worry me most are those

who badly want to leave but are hindered either by a lack of resources or a criminal record that makes

gaining admittance into another country much harder.

Who will be left behind if full-blown fascism arrives in America on the heels of another terrorist attack

(real or sham) or financial collapse or martial law imposed to wipe out opposition to another hopeless war?

Latest Tax Cut

Let's say you have a brother who just can't manage money or pay his bills. He's in

debt up to his eyeballs. His kids aren't getting adequate medical care or education because

of his spending.

Five years ago, he did have money, but blew it all, and more, on a wasteful and destructive

foreign adventure that made your family a lot of enemies. Last week, however, he topped that.

He arranged to borrow a whole lot, most of it, presumably, from the Chinese. But he didn't

use it to pay his bills; he gave most of it to a bunch of millionaires who didn't need it, to curry

favor with them.

So you tell me: Is it time that we stepped in and did an intervention, or whatever it's called,

before our family is ruined forever?

Guess what: Surprise, surprise — this is a story about you, dear comrades! Your recklessly

insolvent brother is our own smirking, stoop-shouldered George W. Bush, the worst president in history.

President's Systematic Lawbreaking

Sunday, April 30, 2006

On March 24, 2006,
The Boston Globe published an article by Charlie Savage reporting that

the President, after signing into law the bill which renewed the Patriot Act, issued a "signing statement"

making clear that "he did not consider himself bound" to comply with various reporting provisions

in the law and therefore reserved the right to violate them. The article was extraordinary because it

noted that the Patriot Act signing statement was merely "the latest in a string of high-profile instances

in which Bush has cited his constitutional authority to bypass a law" -- and the article tied that ideology

of lawlessness to, among other things, the President's deliberate violations of FISA when ordering

warrantless eavesdropping on Americans.

NSA Has Massive Database of Americans' Phone Calls

Updated 5/11/2006 10:38 AM ET

By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions

of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of

the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about

the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not

involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze

calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

President's Monday Night Speech Will Show GOP Continues

To Follow Nazi Path

by Thomas J. Bico

May 13, 2006 –  The comparisons of the current GOP to the Nazis in 1930's Germany have

been frequent and inescapable.  The wars of aggression, the propaganda, the intolerance of dissent,

the overt and constant use of hatred, fear, and repetitive lies, the setup of concentration camps,

sending people away to the camps indefinitely and without trial, torturing them while they are there,

overtly admitting that torture is something they feel they need to do.  This week we also learned that

during the past five years the GOP has also been emulating the Nazis in rounding up as much personal

information about everyone in the nation as possible.

But people have not truly been too worried about things because there is a lingering doubt that the American

GOP would ever turn the corner from 1930's Nazism to the more deadly 1940's version.  However for

any who had that doubt, Monday night marks the end of that doubt and the beginning of the American

GOP's turn from 1930's brand Nazism to 1940's round 'em up Nazism.

It wasn't until the Nazis had depleted and bankrupt the nation due to wars of aggression that they began

rounding up Jews, gays, Catholics, and others by the trainload.  They needed a scapegoat, they needed to

look as if they were addressing the nation's problems, but there were quite simply no more wars that could

be started abroad with the resources available.

The current American GOP has found itself in that position.  Massively in debt, the army stretched thin, the

poll number shows they are likely on their way out.  And so, following the Nazi playbook, the GOP launched,

starting this past December, a crusade to round up 12 million dark skinned people and send them to prisons.

That is exactly what the bill Rep. Sensenbrenner (R) and his GOP colleagues passed in December called for.

Next CIA Head Backed Spying on Citizens

"Doesn't Understand" 4th Amendment
The nomination of Negroponte's right hand man to head the CIA signifies a further crackdown

on civil liberties and the forging ahead of the semi-secret Total Information Awareness Program.

Steve Watson & Alex Jones / Prisonplanet | May 7 2006

General Michael V. Hayden is favorite to step up to take the head position at the CIA after the

resignation of Porter J Goss who stepped down in advance of the revelations that he and a top aide

may have attended Watergate poker parties where bribes and hookers were provided to corrupt congressmen.

Hayden is National Intelligence Director John Negroponte's senior deputy.

"Such a move would bring further power to Mr Negroponte, a rising star of the administration." reports the

London Independent.

Negroponte’s job is to coordinate the work of 16 different intelligence agencies, including the CIA and the

giant National Security Agency, which eavesdrops on international communications, as well as the Energy

Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The role was created immediately after 9/11 and ties in with the Defense Department's

Total Information Awareness Program, which seeks to gather a "lifetime paper trail" of all citizens

and centralize the information on a giant database.

The co-ordination of all intelligence gathering services by Negroponte is the first step of this nightmarish

Orwellian program. The excuse for all this is of course the war on terror.

Life in Bush Economy: Fat, Drunk and Broke

A Nation of Waitresses and Bartenders

By Paul Craig Roberts

05/08/06 -- The Bureau of Labor Statistics payroll jobs report released May 5 says the economy

created 131,000 private sector jobs in April. Construction added 10,000 jobs, natural resources,

mining and logging added 8,000 jobs, and manufacturing added 19,000. Despite this unusual gain,

the economy has 10,000 fewer manufacturing jobs than a year ago.

Most of the April job gain --72%--is in domestic services, with education and health services (primarily

health care and social assistance) and waitresses and bartenders accounting for 55,000 jobs or 42% of the

total job gain. Financial activities added 26,000 jobs and professional and business services added 28,000.

Retail trade lost 36,000 jobs.

During 2001 and 2002 the US economy lost 2,298,000 jobs. These lost jobs were not regained until early

in February 2005. From February 2005 through April 2006, the economy has gained 2,584 jobs (mainly in

domestic services).

The total job gain for the 64 month period from January 2001 through April 2006 is 7,000,000 jobs less

than the 9,600,000 jobs necessary to stay even with population growth during that period. The unemployment

rate is low because millions of discouraged workers have dropped out of the work force and are not counted as unemployed.

In 2005 the US had a current account deficit in excess of $800 billion. That means Americans consumed $800

billion more goods and services than they produced. A significant percentage of this figure is offshore production

by US companies for American markets.

The 'New Totalitarianism' Now Defines a Desperate Neo-con End Game
Date: Monday, May 01 @ 09:02:35 EDT

As the Bush/neo-con kleptocracy disintegrates in a toxic cloud of military defeat, economic bankruptcy,

environmental disaster and escalating mega-scandal, its attack on basic American freedoms---its "New

Totalitarianism"---has escalated to a desperate new level, including brutal Soviet-style prosecutions against

non-violent dissidents and an all-out offensive for state secrecy, including an attack on the internet.

But such honor and honesty comprise the New Totalitarianism's worst nightmare. With indictments

flowing deep into the kleptocracy, the most anti-democratic of all American regimes has just two tactics.

The first is to create a culture of fear while silencing the dissenters, by all means necessary.

The second is to rig voting machines and strip voter rolls to guarantee that no matter how deep dissent

actually carries in this country, it will have no tangible impact on who holds the reins of power. In

tandem comes the deliberate shrinking of the electorate through repressive ID requirements and

digitized voter registration lists. Thus far up to ten percent of the entire Ohio electorate---some

500,000 voters---have been stripped from the state's registration rolls, all from Democratic strongholds.

Bush Challenges Hundreds of Laws
President cites powers of his office

Comment: The headline should read "Bush BREAKS hundreds of laws". If you or I "challenged"

the law in the way Bush has we would be in jail.

WASHINGTON -- President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws

enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress

when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution.

Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions,

requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ''whistle-blower" protections

for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.

Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush's assertions that he can bypass laws represent a

concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the

branches of government. The Constitution is clear in assigning to Congress the power to write the laws

and to the president a duty ''to take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Bush, however, has

repeatedly declared that he does not need to ''execute" a law he believes is unconstitutional.

The Corporate Control Of Society And Human Life

By Stephen Lendman

25 April, 2006
Countercurrents.org

Large transnational corporations are clearly the dominant institution of our time. They're preeminent

throughout the world but especially in the Global North and its epicenter in the US. They control or greatly

influence what we eat and drink, where we live, what we wear, how we get most of our essential services

like health care and even what we're taught in schools up to the highest levels. They create and control

our sources of information and greatly influence how we think and our view of the world and them. They

even now own patents on our genetic code, the most basic elements of human life, and are likely planning

to manipulate and control them as just another commodity to exploit for profit in their brave new world

that should concern everyone. They also carefully craft their image and use catchy slogans to convince us

of their benefit to society and the world, like: "better things for better living through chemistry" (if you don't

mind toxic air, water and soil), "we bring good things to life" for them, not us), and "all the news that's fit to

print" (only if you love state and corporate friendly disinformation and propaganda). The slogans are clever,

but the truth is ugly.

Impeaching Bush, State by State

Forget bird flu, impeachment is spreading across the nation, state by state.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rep. Dave Zuckerman (Prog.-VT) dropped the third of three nearly

unreported bombshells on the Bush administration. Zuckerman, along with 12 fellow lawmakers,

introduced a formal resolution for the Vermont state legislature to call on the U.S. House of

With this resolution, Vermont joined the California and Illinois state legislatures, already embroiled

in impeachment debates of their own.

'36 Bush Disasters'
Posted on Saturday, April 15 @ 08:25:22 EDT

Conservative pundits such as Ann Coulter lash out against Democrats and liberals in general about

such issues as affirmative action, racial preferences, illegal immigration, and campus speech codes.

All of these issues necessitate finding an appropriate balance between freedom and regulation, usually

with different standards relevant to different circumstances. Excesses are possible, and there is often

room for criticism, even ridicule. On the other hand, such pundits avoid taking into account President

Bush's current foreign and domestic agenda, which is far more deserving of critical scrutiny. For most

of his supposedly conservative policy decisions are not debatable, as if one might reasonably support or

reject them at one level or another. Time and again they have simply been wrong and nothing but wrong.

The Case for Impeachment

Why we can no longer afford George W. Bush

Posted on Monday, February 27, 2006. An excerpt from an essay in the March 2006

Harper's Magazine. By Lewis H. Lapham.

Sources

A country is not only what it does—it is also what it puts up with, what it tolerates. —Kurt Tucholsky

On December 18 of last year, Congressman John Conyers Jr. (D., Mich.) introduced into the

House of Representatives a resolution inviting it to form “a select committee to investigate the

Administration's intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war

intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make

recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment.” Although buttressed two

days previously by the news of the National Security Agency's illegal surveillance of the

American citizenry, the request attracted little or no attention in the press—nothing on television

or in the major papers, some scattered applause from the left-wing blogs, heavy sarcasm on the

websites flying the flags of the militant right. The nearly complete silence raised the question as to

what it was the congressman had in mind, and to whom did he think he was speaking? In time of

war few propositions would seem as futile as the attempt to impeach a president whose political

party controls the Congress; as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee stationed

on Capitol Hill for the last forty years, Representative Conyers presumably knew that to expect the

Republican caucus in the House to take note of his invitation, much less arm it with the power of

subpoena, was to expect a miracle of democratic transformation and rebirth not unlike the one looked

for by President Bush under the prayer rugs in Baghdad. Unless the congressman intended some sort

of symbolic gesture, self-serving and harmless, what did he hope to prove or to gain? He answered the

question in early January, on the phone from Detroit during the congressional winter recess.

“To take away the excuse,” he said, “that we didn't know.” So that two or four or ten years from now,

if somebody should ask, “Where were you, Conyers, and where was the United States Congress?”

when the Bush Administration declared the Constitution inoperative and revoked the license of

parliamentary government, none of the company now present can plead ignorance or temporary

insanity, can say that “somehow it escaped our notice” that the President was setting himself up as a

supreme leader exempt from the rule of law.

Bush’s Impeachment As Serial Law Violator

In all 3 impeachment proceedings, the event which triggered the political impeachment process

was the President’s violation of a law. Once the impeachment process was underway, Congress

then determined what constituted an impeachable offense, and additional charges not based on legal

violations were added. Public support for impeaching Bush is highest for his NSA spying program,

but only if it turns out his actions were illegal. But, Congress may ratify Bush’s illegal actions with

new FISA legislation so that by operation of law his prior illegal actions will now be deemed legal,

and potentially provide Bush with a defense at least to the commencement of the impeachment process.

Should that occur, the purpose of this post is to review other laws that Bush has violated as a backup to

trigger the impeachment process.

Bush Does Not Equal Hitler: The 17 Points

Saturday, March 25, 2006

by Dr. Steve Jonas

In the United States a controversy rumbles with increasing intensity: are comparisons claiming that

George Bush and Adolf Hitler have much in common valid? I would like to weigh in on the side that

holds such comparisons indeed are not valid, for the following 17 reasons.

So, there are obviously significant differences between Bush and Hitler. Indeed, based on the examples

in this list, Bush is not Hitler. In fact, compared with Hitler, Bush is something of a piker. Yes, one

must conclude that such comparisons are totally unfair -- to Hitler.

Bush Using Straw-Man Arguments in Speeches

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press WriterSat Mar 18, 12:52 PM ET

"Some look at the challenges in Iraq and conclude that the war is lost and not worth another dime

or another day," President Bush said recently.

Another time he said, "Some say that if you're Muslim you can't be free."

"There are some really decent people," the president said earlier this year, "who believe that the

federal government ought to be the decider of health care ... for all people."

Of course, hardly anyone in mainstream political debate has made such assertions.

A specialist in presidential rhetoric, Wayne Fields of Washington University in St. Louis, views

it as "a bizarre kind of double talk" that abuses the rules of legitimate discussion.

"It's such a phenomenal hole in the national debate that you can have arguments with nonexistent

people," Fields said. "All politicians try to get away with this to a certain extent. What's striking here

is how much this administration rests on a foundation of this kind of stuff."

Deranged, Disconnected, and Dangerous

by Paul Craig Roberts - 3/21/06

On March 17 William Rivers Pitt wrote that Bush is "deranged, disconnected, and dangerous."

In his March 20 Cleveland speech, Bush proved Pitt right.

Bush gave a delusional speech that shows he is detached from reality. "We’re going to help

the Iraqis build a strong democracy that will be an inspiration throughout the Middle East, a

democracy that’ll be a partner in the global war against the terrorists."

Has no one told Bush that the Iraqis cannot even agree to form a government?

Bush Puts America on Death Row

Posted on Thursday, March 16 @ 09:56:34 EST

Hardened cynics often accuse President George W. Bush of ruthlessly exploiting the

tragedy of 9/11 to advance his pre-set agenda of killing a whole heap of foreigners. This

is, of course, a calumnious slander against the Dear Leader's noble ambitions. For as he

clearly demonstrated last week, Bush is also exploiting the tragedy of 9/11 to advance his

pre-set agenda to kill a whole heap of Americans as well.

In yet another of those momentous degradations of public morality that go unremarked by

the ever-vigilant watchdogs of the national media, Bush slipped a measure into the revamped

"Patriot (sic) Act" he signed last week that will allow him to expedite the death penalty

process across the land, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

Bush Declares War on Freedom of the Press

March 6, 2006 07:44 AM / The Rant .

By DOUG THOMPSON

Using many of the questionable surveillance and monitoring techniques that brought both

questions and criticism to his administration, President George W. Bush has launched a war

against reporters who write stories unfavorable to his actions and is planning to prosecute

journalists to make examples of them in his "war on terrorism."

Bush recently directed Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to use "whatever means at

your disposal" to wiretap, follow, harass and investigate journalists who have published

stories about the administration's illegal use of warrantless wiretaps, use of faulty intelligence

and anything else he deems "detrimental to the war on terror."

Reporters for The New York Times, which along with Capitol Hill Blue revealed use of the National

Security Agency to monitor phone calls and emails of Americans, say FBI agents have interviewed

them and criminal prosecutors at the Justice Department admit they are laying "the groundwork

for a grand jury that could lead to criminal charges,"

Bush Plan Would Raise Deficit by $1.2 Trillion, Budget Office Says

By EDMUND L. ANDREWS

Published: March 4, 2006

WASHINGTON, March 3 — President Bush's budget would increase the federal deficit by

$35 billion this year and by more than $1.2 trillion over the next decade, the Congressional Budget

Office reported on Friday.

The nonpartisan budget office said that Mr. Bush's tax-cutting proposals would cost about $1.7

trillion over the next 10 years and that his proposals to partly privatize Social Security would cost

about $312 billion during that period.

The office also said Mr. Bush's proposals to save money on Medicare, Medicaid and most

nonmilitary programs would offset about one-third of the cost of his other proposals.

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and

Executive Orders

There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to

receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they

are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management

Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take

is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant

to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft's list.

Bush's War on History

By Robert Parry
March 1, 2006

“History will be on the ballot,” I wrote two days before Election 2000, though I didn’t

comprehend how much the nation’s ability to know its recent past was weighing in the balance.

Indeed, declassification of records was not even a blip on the campaign’s radar screen,

certainly nothing compared to the news media’s interest in Vice President Al Gore’s “earth-tone”

clothing or Texas Gov. George W. Bush’s pledge to restore “honor and decency” to the White House.

Facing that deadline while taking  the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2001, George W. Bush

had his White House counsel Alberto Gonzales draft up paperwork that first suspended

and then gutted the law. Bush’s Nov. 1, 2001, executive order granted former national

executives – and their families – the right to control the documents indefinitely.

Bush’s order amounted to a grant of hereditary power over the nation’s history. Because

of his father’s 12 years as Vice President and President and his own possible eight years

as President, Bush’s order could mean that control over 20 years of American history

might someday be invested in the hands of the Bush Twins, Jenna and Barbara.

Forget Iran, Americans Should be Hysterical About This

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

Last week the Bureau of Labor Statistics re-benchmarked the payroll jobs data back

to 2000. Thanks to Charles McMillion of MBG Information Services, I have the adjusted

data from January 2001 through January 2006. If you are worried about terrorists, you

don't know what worry is.

Job growth over the last five years is the weakest on record. The US economy came

up more than 7 million jobs short of keeping up with population growth. That's one

good reason for controlling immigration. An economy that cannot keep up with population

growth should not be boosting population with heavy rates of legal and illegal immigration.

Over the past five years the US economy experienced a net job loss in goods producing

activities. The entire job growth was in service-providing activities--primarily credit intermediation,

health care and social assistance, waiters, waitresses and bartenders, and state and local government.

US manufacturing lost 2.9 million jobs, almost 17% of the manufacturing work force.

The wipeout is across the board. Not a single manufacturing payroll classification created a single new job.

Bush to Criminalize Protesters under Patriot Act as "Disruptors"

by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse

Wed Jan 11, 2006 at 07:27:26 PM PDT

Bush wants to create the new criminal of "disruptor" who can be jailed for the crime of

"disruptive behavior." A "little-noticed provision" in the latest version of the Patriot Act will

empower Secret Service to charge protesters with a new crime of "disrupting major events

including political conventions and the Olympics." Secret Service would also be empowered

to charge persons with "breaching security" and to charge for "entering a restricted area" which is "

where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting."

In short, be sure to stay in those wired, fenced containments or free speech zones.

Bush Advisor Says President Has Legal Power to Torture Children

By Philip Watts

01/08/06 "revcom.us" -- -- John Yoo publicly argued there is no law that could prevent

the President from ordering the torture of a child of a suspect in custody – including by

crushing that child’s testicles.

This came out in response to a question in a December 1st debate in Chicago with Notre

Dame professor and international human rights scholar Doug Cassel.

What is particularly chilling and revealing about this is that John Yoo was a key architect

post-9/11 Bush Administration legal policy.

"Conspiracy of Silence", a documentary listed for viewing in

TV Guide Magazine was to be aired on the Discovery Channel,

on May 3, 1994. This documentary exposed a network of religious

leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C.

but their underwear and a number displayed on a piece of cardboard

hanging from their necks when being auctioned off to foreigners in

Las Vegas , Nevada and Toronto , Canada . At the last minute before

airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with

restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired. Almost immediately,

the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who

had ordered all copies destroyed. A copy of this videotape was furnished

anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp

who made it available to retired F.B.I. chief, Ted L. Gunderson. While the video

quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by the participants involved.

Bush's War on Veterans

November 9, 2005
By Mary Shaw

On Friday, November 11, Americans will observe Veteran's Day. This

is a day set aside to honor our war veterans. I cannot think of a more

worthy purpose for a holiday.

Now let me guess: this Veteran's Day, George W. Bush will strut his way

into a specially choreographed photo opportunity and smirk and say some

carefully crafted yet predictable and hollow-sounding words about how the

American people appreciate the sacrifices that our veterans have made in the

noble quest to defend freedom and democracy.

And he will be right. We the people do appreciate the sacrifices that our veterans

have made.

After all, our brave veterans made those sacrifices while Dubya's congressman

dad pulled enough strings to get his boy out of harm's way and into the elite

Texas Air National Guard to avoid Vietnam.

A Can't-Do Government

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Before 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed the

three most likely catastrophic disasters facing America : a terrorist attack

on New York , a major earthquake in San Francisco and a hurricane strike

on New Orleans . "The New Orleans hurricane scenario," The Houston Chronicle

wrote in December 2001, "may be the deadliest of all." It described a potential

catastrophe very much like the one now happening.

So why were New Orleans and the nation so unprepared? After 9/11, hard

questions were deferred in the name of national unity, then buried under a

thick coat of whitewash. This time, we need accountability.

Ethnic cleansing in the USA

They ain't going back. Even if they had a way to get back, which they don't

able to afford to live in the rebuilt city. Governor Owens has apparently been

told the details of the Plan. This is what ethnic cleansing looks like. Could it

be that the failure of the government to even attempt to supply food and water

to the refugees for days was an attempt to kill off the oldest and sickest - the

ones who would eat up government resources in the future - before the rest were

shipped out to their permanent new homes across the country?

  Deal Averts Filibuster Showdown
    MSNBC

    Posted May 25, 2005

Agreement preserves Senate rules, clears way for nominee votes

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's office is scrambling to put the best

possible face on this turn of events. In essence, the "Nuclear Option" is off

the table, but three of Bush's most controversial nominees - Priscilla Owen,

Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor - are federal appeals court judges. For life.

At the center of the deal were Democratic Senator Robert Byrd and

Republican Senator John Warner. They spearheaded the compromise on

'constitutional grounds.' Reid's staffers intimated off the record that this is

a bittersweet result. While Bill Frist's bid to alter the Senate rules failed, a true

rebuke of the GOP's tactics was, once again, not forthcoming. All in all, Reid

came out on top here, but the Democrats paid a high price for the deal.

Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). is really

July 27, 2005

The 2008 Democratic presidential candidates this week are busy genuflecting at

Corporate America's alter—otherwise known as the Democratic Leadership Council

(DLC). Now, it's true—the DLC is really just a group of Beltway-insulated corporate-funded

hacks who have spent the better part of the last decade trying to undermine the Democratic

Party's traditional working class base—a base that had kept Democrats in power for

40 years and now, thanks to the DLC, has been forfeited to the Republicans. Even so,

the fact that these presidential candidates feel the need to bow down to the DLC is a

troubling sign about whether the Democratic Party is really serious about regaining power
