Dangerous Energy Bill Provision Goes Unreported

When the Senate passed its version of the energy bill a few weeks ago, the Washington Post opined: "At some point - maybe 10 years from now, maybe 20 - the energy bill currently wending its way through the Senate will be seen as an enormously significant lost opportunity." The Post went on to decry the lack of provisions to reduce fossil fuel consumption, called it a "status quo" bill, and said it "was nothing to be proud of."

But the Washington Post, along with every other mainstream news media outlet in this country, has completely ignored a truly radical change in the energy bill - the total deregulation of the utility industry that would be accomplished by the repeal of PUHCA, the Public Utilities Holding Company Act.

Nonetheless, bloggers, activists, and now columnist Molly Ivins, are starting to crack open the cone of silence surrounding this deal. The business press has been talking about it all along, but Joe Ratepayer has no idea what the corporate boardrooms have in store for him.
