The Big Lie

Stripped of the usual lies that have driven his Iraq policy from the start, President George W. Bush Tuesday went back to square one and played the big one – trying to tie the 9/11 terrorist attacks to his failed war.
Just the kind of shameless political opportunism one expects from a man with no morality, no courage to face his own failings and no reluctance to barter American lives for a failed agenda.

Bush had been to the 9/11 well many times, too many times in fact, and it is running dry. Polls taken immediately after his bald-faced attempt to use the tragedy of four years ago for political advantage shows most Americans tired of his lies and unwilling to buy his snake oil.

“After September 11, 2001, I told the American people that the road ahead would be difficult – and that we would prevail,” Bush said. “Well, it has been difficult. And we are prevailing.”

Say what? Insurgent attacks in Iraq increase daily and, as Bush spoke, the Pentagon said another 17 American soldiers are feared dead after a Chinook helicopter went down in Afghanistan , the military action that actually does have something to do with 9/11.

Bush lied to the American people, Congress and the world when he claimed three years ago to have proof of a link between al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Like his claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and documentation of the country’s “imminent ability” to construct nuclear weapons, the so-called link was just another lie in a lame attempt to justify a war built on lies and a Presidency run on deception.

The sad truth is that his so-called war on terrorism and the search for Osama bin Laden took a back seat to his ill-conceived personal vendetta in Iraq , one that has – so far – sent more than 1700 American men and women to their graves and shows no signs of letting up.

How many more Americans have to die before people stand up and realize that insanity prevails at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ? How much further must we sink into the morass of lies before something is done to remove this madman from office?

Mention impeachment of Bush and people get all nervous and say things like “oh, we can’t do that. The nation can’t stand the trauma.”

What, prey tell, is more traumatic than sending Americans out to die daily for a war based on lies and assumptions that were, long ago, proven false? What will be more traumatic than the next terrorist attack on our soil? One will surely come become Osama and his legions have had more than enough time to regroup and plan more terror while America wasted time, resources and lives on a war that had nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11.

We already got trauma and that starts with “T” and that rhymes with “B” and that stands for “Bush.”

It’s no longer a question of whether or not this man should be impeached but a matter of what must be done. Bush is out of control. His actions, his lies, his displacement of the Constitution and outright abuse of power certainly meet the criteria for “high crimes and misdemeanors” against the people of the United States .

I reread this document the other day:

“He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

“He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

“He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.”

It describes a despot named George, King George III,  and is part of the Declaration of Independence, that document we celebrate in a few days on an all-American holiday called July 4. It’s too bad we will be celebrating Independence Day at a time when our freedoms are under assault from another tyrant named George.
