September 24: STOP THE WAR
A couple of weeks ago millions saw artist Kanye West abandon the
teleprompter during a nationally televised telethon to speak out
against the racism and repression that our government has been
responsible for in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. NBC later
censored his "controversial" remarks during rebroadcasts. West seemed
nervous as he started, but he looked into the camera and spoke the
truth that was being televised for the world to see, "George Bush
does not care about black people."

Telling the truth to the world, and doing something about the crimes
against humanity that our government commits, takes guts. It usually
takes a little bit of nerve for that first step outside of our usual
routine. Not all of us are able to stand in front of cameras on
national television, but we can all do something that we haven't
already done.

Today, we're tasked with relief and resistance. The government is
clearly not meeting the needs of the people, and watching both
everyday people and celebrities come to the aid of strangers is part
of that better world that we believe is possible. However, the crimes
that our government continues to commit against people, whether it is
here or across oceans, are unacceptable. We must act quickly, before
we all get used to the idea that "this is how things are going to
be." This is NOT how things have to be, but its up to us to change
it. Relief, not repression. Resistance, not resignation!

Join Not in Our Name at the national march to stop the war in
Washington DC this Saturday, September 24! Meet us at the Ellipse in

Not in Our Name
September 14, 2005

"We believe that as people living in the United States, it is our
responsibility to resist the injustices done by our government, in
our names."
– Not in Our Name
Pledge of Resistance

The Not in Our Name project extends its sincerest sympathies and
solidarity to those on the Gulf Coast who were senselessly affected
by a preventable tragedy. Millions watched the news, outraged as
cries for help went unanswered by the government for several days and
Governor Blanco issued orders to "shoot to kill."

We say NOT IN OUR NAME to an administration that wages illegal,
immoral wars, terrorizing innocent people across the globe under the
guise of "building democracy," while blatantly neglecting real and
preventable threats to its own people within its borders. This
disaster was not natural, it was man-made. This government's agenda
of war and repression, and the living legacy of brutal racism in this
country, are continuing to cause suffering of epic proportions. The
Bush Administration is responsible for crimes of negligence. Ignoring
scientific warnings against global warming, diverting funds away from
levee repair and into Homeland Security, criminalizing those trying
to survive, and now unlawfully detaining those displaced by the
hurricane– on all of these counts and more, we say GUILTY!

It is not enough to know that what is happening on the Gulf Coast and
in Iraq are wrong. It is exactly at times like these that we must
stand up and say so, boldly and publicly. To do anything less is a
step towards acceptance and compliance. We will not comply, as long
as we know that countless deaths will continue until this agenda is
stopped. We must not allow this horrible disaster to be swept under
the rug like so many other crimes and lies committed by this
government. We join the call for a movement to Unite to Drive Out the
Bush Regime. Enough is enough!

We call for an end to the repressive measures being brought down on
those suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We continue
to demand that U.S. troops leave Iraq immediately. Another world is
possible, and we pledge to make it real!
